From time immemorial, the one spiritual, divine Being has been the central theme of spiritual seekers and visionaries. Whole libraries could be filled with books on this subject. As our age is undoubtedly at the threshold of a great spiritual mutation and labors heavily with the realization of a new structure of consciousness, we must be clear that each new change of such magnitude demands a new terminology, new symbols, in order to be able to communicate the new vista. The reduction of the infinite. The writers of the Bible, using the practical symbols of their time (mountains, rocks, shepherds, lamps, clothing, etc.), required nearly 3000 pages to put forth the Bible's spiritual message. Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy (also known as "the Textbook"), needs only 600 pages to elucidate its spiritually scientific message, because it presents the nature, essence, and wholeness of infinite Being in much more abstract concepts (science, system, idea, metaphysics, calculus, etc.) than those given in the Bible. No wonder that, at first, the reader feels that the Textbook has very little in common with the Bible. Though the biblical language still sounds through the text, the reader is introduced to language more metaphysical and abstract, better adapted to our age of scientific reasoning. Through the metaphysical interpretation, the Bible takes on a new meaning. As ideas are free from space and time, and are constantly in operation, metaphysics lifts the Bible out of its historical framework and explains it as a Science of ideas, completely free of time, space, things, and people, and so forth. But can this symbolism be reduced further? The Model of Being (pdf, 38 KB), which is derived completely from the Textbook, is only one page. This page symbolizes the nature, the interrelations and the whole dynamics and laws of spiritual Being: it is a model of divine cybernetics (pdf, 25 KB). How is it possible to describe—on one single printed page—such an all-embracing subject as the structure of the one Being and its self-operating laws? A reasonable answer can only be given if thought is first led, step-by-step, to the standpoint of the Model of Being (also known as "the Chart"); only then can its inner meaning be interpreted rightly and fully, and so be comprehended in its vastness. Divine System of Reference The symbols used in the Model of Being are found in the Christian Science textbook and verified in the symbolism of the Bible. This system is composed of three ontological root categories that comprise the essence of the Science of Christian Science. These main categories, called the divine system of reference, are:
The One Book Just as Science and Health contains the whole truth of the Bible and, in addition, the Principle and rule of its demonstration, so also the Model of Being contains the whole truth of the Textbook (because it has evolved from the Textbook), and at the same time the method of creative, scientific thinking. Thus, the Bible, the Texbook, and the Model of Being are complementary, forming a unity, one statement, one book (pdf, 24 KB). The Seven 1000-year Periods in Biblical History The tones of Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, and Love form the basic structure of the presentation of the Bible as it evolves into the presentation of Science and Health, and as it eventually evolves onward into the Model of Being. We find evidence of this in the statement: "one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day" (II Peter 3:8). If we consider the seven days of creation from this standpoint, we can see that one day of creation is as a thousand years. Therefore, the seven days of creation are the tones behind the seven 1000-year periods as they develop within the Bible and evolve on to Science and Health, and eventually on to the Model of Being. The Bible The Bible presents only a part of the spiritual unfoldment of the divine idea yet foretells its future. The Old Testament covers a period of 4,000 years, and teaches through its symbolism the metaphysical meaning of the first four days of creation, the first to fourth 1000-year period of biblical history. The fifth 1000-year period of biblical history begins with the New Testament, Christ Jesus, and illustrates the spiritual meaning of the fifth day of creation: Life, fullness, multiplication. Yet, the first record of creation shows a process of spiritual unfoldment through seven days (stages). Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy The sixth 1000-year period brought the rebirth of the age of science, the "dominion" of man over the earth, and in the course of the unfoldment of the spiritual idea, gave us the textbook of Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy states that she did not receive her revelation of Christian Science from the Bible, but directly from God. Christian Science is not an interpretation of the Bible, but the immediate revelation from Being. Her statements are completely new, as she said herself "hopelessly original." Only after receiving the revelation was she able to interpret the Bible in a new light. The Bible itself is like a great composition. Science and Health gives to it the scientific interpretation but is also a new, further scientific composition of Being. Mrs. Eddy was not primarily an interpreter, but revelator bringing out newly revealed forms of truth. The Model of Being (the Model of Divine Cybernetics) As we enter the seventh 1000-year period, the spiritual steps from the sixth to the seventh day are breaking new ground: everywhere in the world an enormous breakthrough is evident: the idea of oneness, unity, comprehensiveness, complete integration and universality, as symbolized by the seventh day of creation. The Christ-idea will not rest until this new change, this shifting of the accent from scientific interpretation to divine revelation, takes place with each of us. Whoever is consciously open to it will be used by God, divine Principle, as a "revelator." "The Scriptures and Christian Science reveal 'the way' and personal revelators will take their proper place in history, but will not be deified" (Mis. 308). The Model of Being serves as a guide on this way; it offers the spiritually scientific method of infinite computations: it is a "divine computer," so to speak.
